Efficient on-the-Job Training:
When onboarding new employees joining our unit, I would propose to update the way we train them. When I was trained, a lecture on how to review an application was followed by our retreating to our cubes and attempting to review an application solo. This is, of course, a time-tested classical model of instruction, and it did, in fact, suffice.
However, a “flipped classroom” model would perhaps work far better. If new employees are provided the policies and procedures for reviewing an application and an example of an application and are asked to prepare for our “workshopping time” by reading through all the material on their own, then we could come together and have new employees attempt to work an application with senior specialists on hand to answer questions as they tackle their first app.
This type of experiential model of instruction, which makes use of the flipped classroom model, will maximize the value of time spent working with superiors. When the application review is complete, a superior can review the new employee’s work and then schedule a one-on-one to debrief their progress.
New employees will also be encouraged to work collaboratively with an awareness that Collectivism, learning and working in community, will sure help them develop their skills more quickly as they pull from one another’s strengths.
